A1A Half a Million trees and still counting...
During Susana Villaran's term as Mayor of Lima the small but impressive Adopta un Arbol Programme planted more than half a million trees in Lima, the world's second biggest desert city. A really well designed programme with agreements signed with local organisations and local councils to ensure the care and longevity of the trees. Species were selected that required minimal water and local people commited to watering them.
Sadly Susana is no longer Mayor and things have rather gone back to the old ways and trees are being chopped down by the municipality rather than planted. I only hope that those trees already planted will flourish
